Sure, it's not the NFL — but it's still professional football and that counts for something, right?

Michael Sam took to his Twitter account Friday to proudly announce that he has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

If you recall, Sam made history during the 2014 NFL Draft by becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted by a league team, with the St. Louis Rams picking him in the seventh round. But his stay in the NFL would be shortlived. Sam was cut by the Rams in late August, only to be picked up and released by the Dallas Cowboys a short time later.

Sam would then join the cast of ABC's Dancing with the Stars and try to continue his dream of playing in the NFL by participating in the league's veteran combine this past March. However, he didn't impress a team enough to give him a shot. Instead, a few scouts flat out said he wasn't good enough to play defensive end in the NFL. Sam, in turn, asserted that he hasn't been given an NFL contract because he's gay.

The only problem with signing with the Alouettes is that Sam may want to replace "NFL" in his Twitter handle – @MichaelSamNFL – to CFL. Touchdown!
