The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt isn't a game that holds your hand. It basically leaves everything up to the player: finding food, upgrading weapons and earning money are all left for you to figure out. The latter can be particularly troublesome, as many of the main story quests reward players with experience points rather than actual money. It's not uncommon to find Geralt wandering around with empty pockets, that's for sure.

However, there was one way around The Witcher 3's unforgiving income: the cows. By exploiting a glitch in one of the game's stables, players could mow down an infinite number of cows, then sell the hides for a high price. In a lot of ways, it broke the game: there were still plenty of difficult quests out in the world, but they're a whole lot easier when Geralt can afford to buy some of the best armor in the game with zero effort.

That's why, depending on your point of view, the game's latest update is either a reason to celebrate or a curse unlike any other. Instead of simply removing the cows or placing a limit on how many items a player could sell, CD Projekt Red introduced the 'Bovine Defense Force Initiative.' Many seasoned gamers may immediately think of the hidden cow level from Diablo II, but The Witcher 3's response is a bit more dramatic than that:

Before the patch went live, the stables would usually look something like this:

Nothing too out of the ordinary, save for the corpses of countless innocent cows. However, with the Patch 1.05 update, any player attempting to take advantage of the spawning system is attacked by an incredibly powerful monster called a Chort - basically, this thing is so powerful that it can wipe out low-level characters in a single hit.

Because the patch is so new, there's no telling if the monster scales with the player's level - however, considering money is far easier to come by in the latter stages of the game, it's likely that players won't even need to use the glitch in the first place.

Right now, the Bovine Defense Force Initiative (and the rest of Patch 1.05) is limited to the PC, as the PlayStation 4 version is currently sitting at version 1.04 and the Xbox One is at 1.03. So, console players - if you're looking for easy money, do it now...it won't be much longer before the Bovine Defense Force Initiative makes its way to your hardware, too.
