Syfy is letting Comic-Con attendees see, hear and feel the world they created in its new space drama by bringing the solar system here on Earth — with a little help from virtual reality.

The TV network is giving away 13,000 Google Cardboard headsets, the DIY cardboard VR set, during this week's San Diego's Comic-Con in promotion of its new series The Expanse.

Based on the best-selling space series by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse follows the story of an officer on an ice mining spacecraft, a detective on a quest to find a missing girl lost in space and a politician on earth, as humanity attempts to colonize the solar system.

By downloading The Expanse virtual reality app on iOS and Android smartphones, Comic-Con attendees can use Google's cardboard VR set to explore the spaceship called "The Canterbury," which is featured in the series. Users can explore the ship, which hauls ice from Saturn's moons to the asteroid belt where people live, as well as immerse themselves into the streets of Ceres. Users can also see what Earth will fictitiously look like in 2350. Syfy will add new content to the add in the upcoming months.

When using the YouTube app for the show, the user can move his or her phone or tablet around to see different angles as the video plays. Users on a desktop can also do the same by dragging on the mouse to view a specific point.

If attendees don't want to quickly assemble the DIY VR set on the spot, the app also works without the use of a headset in a mode called "magic window." Users just have to move the phone around to be able the explore the world of space.

The app is also compatible with other VR headsets such as Oculus Rift.

San Diego Comic-Con attendees can pick up their free Google Cardboard VR headsets at the Expanse Cafe in the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego.

The Expanse will premiere on Syfy in December.
