Ever since the program was first announced, Sony has been giving PlayStation Plus subscribers free games. It's one of the main draws of the program: sure, you're paying a few extra bucks a month to play online, but you're getting free games as a result. For thousands of subscribers, the trade-off is more than worth the asking price.

There is one drawback to the system, however: there's no way of choosing which games will be available for free. True, the selection of free PS Plus games is usually pretty great, but there will always be someone who won't have anything to get excited about. For years now, gamers have simply accepted it as a part of the program... but it looks like that needn't be the case for much longer.

NeoGAF user El_Cinefilo happened to stumble across a video in the UK version of the "What's New" section on his PlayStation 4 — one that described the "Vote to Play" feature. According to the video, some huge changes are headed to PS Plus: namely, the ability for gamers to vote on which free games become available each month.

There are limits to this new system; it's not as if players will be able to vote for whatever they want. Judging from the screenshots taken by Cinefilo, fans will have a pool of three different games to choose from, and whichever game is the most popular at the end of the voting period becomes one of the free PS Plus games.

Surprisingly, the feature may be ready to go as soon as next month: one of the games pictured is Armello, an upcoming tactical RPG. The team behind Armello recently revealed its September 1 release date — considering that other indie games have debuted for free as a part of similar loyalty programs before, it's not crazy to think that Armello and Vote to Play will be launching together next month. What's even stranger is that Grow Home – which is currently exclusive to PC – is on the list as well...

Remember to take all this with a grain of salt: until Sony makes an official announcement, there's no way to tell if any of this is actually happening. That said, the photos are pretty convincing, and Sony giving players the power to choose which games they want for free isn't all that far-fetched an idea.

Who knows — maybe this time next month, PS Plus subscribers won't be waiting for Sony to announce its free games, but will be waiting to vote on them instead.

If you want to check out everything to do with the leak, head on over to the NeoGAF thread.
