New reports have claimed that Chris Pine has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to play the character Steve Trevor in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

This came as a shock to many who have been hoping he would sign on as a Green Lantern.

The report was made by The Wrap, who claimed that Pine signed a multi-picture deal with Warner Bros., which suggests he might show up in a Wonder Woman sequel or even a Justice League movie.

It also means that the rumors of the first Wonder Woman film being set in the past might not be entirely true. If the Wonder Woman movie is set in the 40s or earlier and unless future films featuring Wonder Woman is set during the same timeline, we see no reason for Pine to sign a multi-picture deal.

Who is Steve Trevor and which version of the character could be used in the film?

The character first appeared in All Star Comics #8 back in 1942. He met Wonder Woman during the World War II when his plane crashed on her homeland. Both he and Wonder Woman managed to form a short-term relationship, but these days, their relationship is mainly based on sexual needs.

We also need to look at the fact that Warner Bros. could be going with the newer version of the Steve Trevor character. This version is based in the future and has a hand in the creation of the Justice League.

Trevor is also the head of A.R.G.U.S, or the Advanced Research Group for Uniting Super-Humans. He was also made the UN's liaison to the Justice League, which means if the United Nations wants to communicate with the league, they will have to go through Trevor.

It is clear that Steve Trevor is more useful as a character in the present rather than one in the past. Still, it doesn't mean the Wonder Woman movie must be based in the present alone. The writer and director could go for something that takes place first in the past then jumps to the present at a later time in the film.

At the end of the day, we'd be happy if Chris Pine is truly Steve Trevor. Many fans would have preferred him to be Hal Jordan, and we are in complete agreement, but being the modern Steve Trevor is not a bad thing either.

The Wonder Woman movie will first hit theaters in 2017.
