Microsoft unveiled footage of gameplay for Crackdown 3 at Gamescon and it certainly did not fail to impress with its destruction mechanic that allows players to topple down buildings and level entire cities – but only when connected online in multiplayer mode.

Microsoft is tapping into the power of cloud computing to save on development costs and for extra computing power, according to reports. In addition, destruction in single-player mode simply would not work in context with the game, David Jones, creative director for Crackdown 3, told IGN.

"You have to be online for multiplayer, and at that point we can connect to the cloud and really expand the experience ... you're meant to be saving the city [in the campaign], so we really wanted to create a new multiplayer experience that bent that,” he said.

Jones also promised that multiplayer mode would be more than just simply a deathmatch. So even if you won't be able to wreak as much havoc on the city in single-player mode, you're sure to enjoy the destruction capabilities in multi-player mode with the combined computing power of your team.

“You can’t [destroy buildings in single-player] and in some respects that goes against the grain of what Crackdown is. It was all about physicality, so we really wanted to bring that physicality to the online [multiplayer] space,” Jones also said, as confirmed by David Scammell in a series on tweets along with other Crackdown 3 news revealed at Gamescon.
