There's already plenty of independent game developers, filmmakers and others experimenting with virtual reality, and it looks like Samsung is now set to give at least some of them a bit of a boost and potentially expose their work to a bigger audience. As Fast Company reports today, the company is launching a new channel known as "Gear Indie" that will be available exclusively on its Gear VR headset, and the channel will bring with it a number of incentives for independent VR content producers.

That will reportedly include regular challenges that will ask VR filmmakers to create a VR experience on a specific topic and reward the winners with prizes, as well as a new mentorship program that will pair indie VR creators with established figures in the VR industry.

According to Fast Company, the channel itself will launch with five short VR films, with another two added each day this week. Those numbers will apparently increase over time, but from the sound of things Samsung appears to be committed to a more selective approach as to how much it will feature. Fast Company has more on the initial launch, including some still from the first batch of films.
