The popular Skylanders franchise is known for incorporating action figures into the virtual world of a video game. Now Skylanders will be bringing that same idea to the card game genre.

Activision announced the new mobile game Skylanders Battlecast Tuesday. In it, players use their Skylanders heroes to battle against enemies using a physical deck of cards or a digital card pack purchased within the game.

Skylanders Battlecast can be played on a tablet or other mobile device. Keeping with the Skylanders tradition of physical objects interacting with the virtual game, players can place their cards in front of their mobile device's camera lens and watch the Skylanders character on it become animated within the game, as shown in the trailer below.

Players will also be able to collect cards to build up the best-possible team of Skylanders heroes. Once they have their team assembled, players can then compete against others online or offline with friends.

Other than that, there aren't many details available about actual gameplay just yet. However, it looks like Skylanders Battlecast will marry the collectibility of the Pokemon Trading Card Game with the typical battle gameplay of a successful digital card game franchise like Hearthstone.

For now, you can watch the full Skylanders Battlecast trailer below.

Skylanders Battlecast will be free to download from the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. It is scheduled to be released in 2016.
