HTC is gearing up to join the ranks of Samsung, LG, Huawei and Motorola as it is reportedly working on its first-ever smartwatch to run on Android Wear.

According to a report by Phandroid, which cites reliable sources, HTC is on course to release a smartwatch with a round dial. The device is allegedly codenamed "Halfbeak" and will sport a pixel resolution of 360 x 360.

"According to new information available to us, we now know that HTC is working on an upcoming Android Wear smartwatch. Their wearable is codenamed halfbeak (which just so happens to be a type of fish like other Android Wear watches), will come equipped with a round display, and sports a 360 x 360 resolution," said the site's sources.

A leaked flyer pointed to HTC hosting an event on Sept. 29 in Japan. The flyer had an image of Mt. Fuji and the Himalayas, as well as the number 2 in Roman numeral. When the invite's text is translated, it says "double flagship," fueling speculation that HTC will be releasing two flagship devices.

Rumors are already rife that HTC has a new smartphone, A9 Aero, in the pipeline, which will be unveiled at its event. The second flagship device the invite is hinting at could possibly be the Halfbeak.

HTC was previously rumored to be working on a smartwatch dubbed Petra, which is yet to see the light of day. The smartwatch was said to sport a 1.8-inch POLED display with a resolution of 320 x 160 pixels. The Petra was also rumored to come in three sizes and was both water and dust proof.

Earlier in June, Tech Times reported that the company was allegedly working on an HTC One Wear smartwatch, which would launch close on the heels of the LG G Watch and Moto 360 II. The wearable was said to boast a metal or polycarbonate body and would possibly have two variants.

Whether the rumored HTC Halfbeak is the Petra or HTC One Wear is unclear. It remains to be seen if the company finally takes the plunge into the smartwatch space.
