Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind upon mention of the names Vampirella, Dejah Thoris and Red Sonja is their heroic adventures portrayed in pulp, comic books, TV and film. The second thing that comes to mind is their cutthroat, sexy outfits.

These ladies are about to get a wardrobe upgrade, with a look that's altered for a modern take on their iconic costumes.

Dynamite has recently announced that it will launch a new series for Vampirella, Dejah Thoris and Red Sonja in 2016. This new direction for the heroines comes with a wardrobe update.

"We're doing a monster makeover with these characters, and it's a joy to be part of this," Dynamite Entertainment writer Gail Simone (Batgirl, Deadpool) announced.

Red Sonja, to be released in January 2016, written by Marguerite Bennett (Bombshells, A-Force) with art from Aneke (Legenderry: Red Sonja, Damsels), sees its titular heroine return to her homeland of Hyrkania, only to find it changed into an almost unrecognizable landscape.

Dejah Thoris, to be released in February 2016, written by Frank J. Barbiere (Avengers World), artist TBA, presents a loss of status, as she launches herself on exile, taking up a new identity and signing up as a fighter on the dangerous borders of her Barsoomian civilization.

Vampirella, to be released in March 2016, written by Kate Leth (Adventure Time), artist TBA, returns to the character's roots as a horror hostess, she reveals her masked identity.

"Our mission here is to spruce up their look and remind people that these were the original female ass-kickers that inspired Xena, Buffy, and Leia Organa," Simone continued.

Artist Nicola Scott admitted to having having fun designing the characters and hopes that cosplayers will take up the new look.

As regards the accessibility of the new series, Simone says, "You don't need to know their history, you just need to like awesome damn women doing awesome damn stuff. Come join us!"
