The heroes today are back as legends four-ever.

Expendables 4 is set to shoot in 2016 and to be released in 2017. Both cast and director are unconfirmed, but fans can definitely count on the all-action star cast as the budget for production is set to be over $100 million.

Following the deal made between Nu Image/Millenium and SP International Pictures, on behalf of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution, a report confirms that the film will be produced by Dr. Shi Jianxiang and Steven Paul (Baby Geniuses, Ghost Rider, Tekken). Equity investments and Chinese distribution rights are covered by the same agreement. While the option to film in China for some scenes is a probability, it is unlikely that there will be enough Chinese elements in the movie for it to be a co-production.

"What seems to work in their favor in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot 'em up entertainment," Paul said in the report.

SP International Pictures, owned by Paul, has risen to become one of China's most active Hollywood independent companies. The Expendables is an ensemble action film that pays homage to the 1980s and early 1990s blockbuster action films.

Though Expendables 3 made significantly less than the first two movies, it still managed to earn $78 million in China and almost $40 million in North America, where it was handled by Lionsgate Films. It starred Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone.

The fair to middling performance of the movie has been attributed to a combination of different factors, including Internet leakage of the film and the change of rating from R to PG-13.

"I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone's part in trying to reach a wider audience, and in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I'm quite certain it won't happen again," Stallone admitted.
