While AI dominated the spotlight at this year's Google I/O keynote, as everyone expected, some notable updates will roll out soon on different operating systems.

There's some exciting news for Android 15 and Wear OS 5 users. Among these updates are the most awaited enhancements to passkey features, which will improve user convenience and security.

Apple might be the pioneer of passkey, but more tech companies are adopting this passwordless approach. What's waiting for us when it comes to this special login method?

Streamlined Sign-In Process in Android 15

Google I/O: New Passkey Updates Coming in Android 15, Wear OS 5

(Photo: Google) With the trend around passkeys, more companies are embracing this passwordless login. Google, for instance, plans to bring it to Android 15 and Wear OS 5 soon.

Google introduced a streamlined sign-in process for Android 15 in the "Passkeys and Identity Best Practices" developer session. This surprises the crowd since no one expects passkeys to be highlighted in the latest tech show.

For those wondering how it works, the new feature consolidates the account selection and biometric prompt screens into a single interface. This means users can now log in with just one tap using their face, fingerprint, or any screen unlocking method. This improvement will be automatically supported in new versions of Credential Manager on Android 15 or higher.

Enhanced Autofill Integration

As per 9to5Google, Android 15 will also enhance the Autofill feature by integrating Credential Manager results directly into Gboard. This update will simplify entering passwords, passkeys, and Sign in with Google credentials, making it more convenient for users to access their accounts without requiring numerous login requests.

Effortless App Login with Restore Passkey Feature

A notable addition to Android 15 is the "Restore" passkey feature, designed to make logging back into apps on new devices easier. This feature allows an app to save a restore key to Credential Manager, which is stored locally on the device.

If cloud backups are enabled, the restore key can be automatically transferred to a new device, eliminating the need for users to log into each app individually.

Passkeys Coming to Wear OS 5

Android 15 is the only recipient of the passkeys. The Verge reports that Wear OS 5 will benefit from the quarterly platform release that brings passkeys to smartwatches.

Users can authenticate with passkeys and passwords for Sign in with Google directly from their wrists. This feature will support third-party password managers, with Dashlane being one of the first examples. This update helps Wear OS 5 compete with Apple Watch, which already offers similar authentication capabilities.

From the get-go, Google knew that its operating systems should not lag behind its competitors, especially Apple, the leader in passkeys. Aside from the search engine giant, Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has integrated passkey support for the iPhone version of the app.

By streamlining sign-in processes, integrating passkeys into Autofill, and introducing new features like the Restore passkey, Google makes it easier for users to manage their digital identities. These improvements are set to provide a smoother, more secure experience for Android and Wear OS users alike.
