Seagate unveiled the first 8TB hard disk drive (HDD) that has been designed for surveillance applications at the China Public Security Expo.

The new 3.5-inch 8TB Surveillance HDD, which will have a price tag of about $385, is able to store over 800 hours of high-definition video recorded by up to 64 cameras working at the same time. The 8TB Surveillance HDD is also capable of running non-stop for 24 hours a day and seven days a week, according to Seagate.

Seagate's 8TB Surveillance HDD utilizes lower operating power, with rotational sensors which decrease the effect of vibrations when plugged into networked video surveillance systems that feature several drives.

The HDD is not the first one by Seagate to boast a capacity of 8TB, as the company started shipping the first 3.5-inch 8TB HDD in the world last year. This drive utilizes shingled magnetic recording to expand capacities beyond the 4TB limit. However, that drive was designed to be used in data center storage arrays, and not surveillance system-specific as the 8TB Surveillance HDD.

The latest 8TB Surveillance HDD, however, uses conventional perpendicular magnetic recording technology.

"The Surveillance HDD 8TB can serve as a critical component to ensure successful, scalable and reliable solutions so business leaders can focus on other priorities knowing they have the coverage they need. Engineered to run 24x7, the 3.5-inch drive can store over 800 hours of high-definition (HD) content captured by up to 64 cameras simultaneously recording HD content," Seagate explains.

The release of the 8TB Surveillance HDD in the event in China is interesting, as the country has a massive appetite for storage in the space due to how much surveillance its military and government carries out. As such, China is a natural market for the biggest HDDs that Seagate offers.
