Sony started rolling out an update for its Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Dual and Xperia Z5 Compact, aiming to fix the Stagefright exploit.

The update will apparently bring several other improvements to the handsets, including enhancements to the camera, fingerprint sensor and heat management.

The news comes from the Xperia Blog, which reports that Sony is now rolling out the update with build number 21.0.A.6.152. Getting the treat now are the Xperia Z5 with model numbers E6603 and E6653, the Xperia Z5 Dual with model numbers E6683 and E6683 and the Xperia Z5 Compact with model numbers E5803 and E5823. The OTA reportedly weighs in at 281 MB.

"The update provides a full fix for the Stagefright exploit with users reporting an enhanced camera performance, better heat management and higher accuracy from the fingerprint sensor," notes the publication.

The Xperia Blog further notes that the update is rolling out already in a number of regions, hitting each version of the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Dual and Xperia Z5 Compact.

At the same time, keep in mind that all OTA updates roll out gradually and not all devices get the treat at the same time. Consequently, some owners of the aforementioned smartphones may have to wait a while longer to receive the update. Nevertheless, the Stagefright fix is on its way and the update will show up on your handset when it's ready. Alternately, users can also check whether the update is available via the Sony PC Companion desktop application.

As a reminder, the latest Stagefright exploit (v2.0) uses the web browser and infects a device either through malicious ads or though other attacks. Stagefright affects devices running any and all versions of Android up to 5.0 Lollipop.

Mobile security company Zimperium was the one to discover the malware, sharing its findings with the Android Security Team back in August. It took nearly two months for a fix to become available and it will take a while longer for the rollout to complete, but Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Dual and Xperia Z5 Compact owners should be safe from Stagefright soon enough.

Sony is expected to roll out a similar update to more of its devices, but no details are available yet in this regards.
