Cyber attacks are on the rise in recent times, and no, China is no longer to be blamed for everything. According to a report from Akamai, most cyber-attacks during the quarter originated from Indonesia.

In the second quarter of 2013, Akamai reported that cyber attacks originate from 175 countries, with Indonesia accounting for 38 percent of those attacks, which is up from 21 percent in the first quarter. China took the number 2 position with 33 percent, down by 1 percent in the previous quarter. The United States held on to third place but dropped from 8.3 percent to 6.9 percent.

The Asia Pacific accumulates for 79 percent of all cyber attacks, Akamai said in its yearly state of the Internet report. This number is up from 68 percent in the first quarter of the year, and 56 percent in Q4, 2012. North America and Europe had just over 10 percent, while Africa had just three-tenths of a percent.

About 89 percent of cyber attacks originate from the top 10 countries, according to the report. China and Indonesia is responsible for more than half of that percentage of attacks. Furthermore, for the first time since 2008, Microsoft Directory Services was not the most targeted port. Instead, cyber hackers now seems to have more interest in secure Web browser communication and the WWW system. They took the number 1 and number 2 spots, respectively.

"The vast majority (90 percent) of attacks targeting Ports 80 and 443 originated from Indonesia, up from 80 percent last quarter," according to Akamai's findings.

Moreover, Akamai noted that DDoS attacks are up 56 percent quarter over quarter, to 318 attacks in Q2. The majority of these attacks target the enterprise sector, with a strong emphasis on financial organizations, along with healthcare and pharmaceutical businesses. Media and entertainment firms dealt with 53 attacks, high-tech 23 times, while commerce firms were hit with 91 attacks.

Akamai claims a group that the Syrian Electronic Army claimed accountability for, launched numerous attacks against media and news companies throughout the second quarter of 2013.
