Looks like you can't bring the force with you to the movie theater.

Cosplayers looking to show up to the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with lightsaber in hand will not be able to do so in select theaters.

Two major theater chains discreetly announced that lightsabers and other weapons featured in the franchise will not be allowed for the screening of the highly anticipated film.

Cinemark announced the ban via a poster advertising the movie's release. The small print on the poster reads, "Star Wars costumes are welcome. However, no face coverings, face paint or simulated weapons (including lightsabers/blasters) will be allowed in the building."

AMC is also putting in place a ban on lightsabers, although Star Wars fans will still be able to show up in their Darth Vader or Kylo Ren gear.

"AMC does not permit weapons or items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the movie-going experience," its website reads. "Guests are welcome to come dressed in costume, but we do not permit masks. In short, bring your lightsaber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster and Darth Vader mask at home."

While some fans might be bummed out, the ban is to ensure the safety of all moviegoers as theaters step up security measures following the shootings during the midnight viewing of The Dark Knight Rises by gunman James Holmes in 2012, and the shooting at a screening of Trainwreck this July that resulted in the deaths of 2 people.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on Dec. 18.
