Season six of the British TV series "Downton Abbey" aired its finale tonight, bringing the period drama to a near end.

Almost, but not quite.

Warning: Finale spoilers up ahead.

The finale attempted to come with the best resolution for Henry Talbot and Lady Mary, following their breakup last week.

While Mary was given her happy ending, the same could be said of her younger sister, Edith. Nothing spelled out "spite" more than when, in a jealous rage, Mary broke the news about Marigold to Bertie Pelham - the events of which led up to Edith and Bertie's split.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their fury over the plot twist that left Edith, yet again, alone. They asked for creator Julian Fellowes to grant Edith the happiness she had long deserved.

"Properly ticked off. Nasty Mary gets a happy ending, Edith and Thomas just get swept aside in the dregs of storyline," said Jane Pound.

"Absolutely RAGING that was the #DowntonAbbey finale. Why does Mary get the happy ending? #sooverit #butalsonot #justreallysad," posted Michelle C Hopewell.

"Julian Fellowes had better give us #BertieAndEdith in our Christmas stockings, or there'll be trouble! #DowntonAbbey," wrote Erica James.

While the finale wasn't exactly the most delightful episode (unless you are Lady Mary, or perhaps a fan), it cannot be labelled as the most unfortunate, either. The storyline helped put the wheels in motion for supporting characters such as Robert, Cora and Mrs. Patmore, as well as Mr. Molesley.

Meanwhile, fans were emotional after watching their favorite show (nearly) come to an end.

While finales are usually self-explanatory, "Downton Abbey" will return next month for a Christmas special. Till then, we can only expect to see more speculation over the tragedy that is Edith's storyline. Hopefully, the episode will be able to tie up any loose ends to redeem the heart wrenching finale.
