Panasonic's Toughbook line has built a solid reputation for offering the most rugged laptops, optimized for use in challenging environments whether field services, construction or utilities equipped with extreme conditions.

It's now upping the ante by introducing the Toughbook 20, billed by the company as the world's first rugged detachable laptop. Essentially users will get the best of both laptop and tablet worlds — outfitted in a rugged treatment — with this one purchase, which will be available February 2016 for an estimated $3,099, including a standard three-year limited warranty.

"Our customers are constantly pushing the boundaries of how and where our devices are used," Jan Ruderman, vice president of Panasonic's business mobility group, said in a press release. "As a truly customer-driven solution, the Toughbook 20 delivers what many of our customers are looking for — a single rugged device that delivers all the advantages of a fully functioning laptop and tablet."

The Toughbook 20 actually boasts six usage modes: traditional laptop, detached tablet, tablet flipped 180 degrees while attached for presentations, convertible mode with keyboard attached, built-in carry mode or hanging on a wall, and vehicle mode while the device is on the move.

Continuing its rugged reputation, the Toughbook 20 stands up to everything from electromagnetic interference, drops, shocks, extreme temperatures (hot and cold), rain, sand and is waterproof and dustproof.

The Toughbook 20 also has a sixth-generation Intel Core vProTM Processor with 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM and your choice of Windows 10 Pro or Windows 7 Professional. The device also has a 10.1" WUXGA 1920 x 1200 sunlight-viewable display.

Pretty tough.
