Nintendo fans are hungry for news about Legend of Zelda on Wii U. The game was pushed back out of 2015 for a release sometime in 2016, but Nintendo has offered few details on a more specific release window or even what the as of yet untitled game will be about.

If you were hoping details on the game would come out of the Nintendo Direct yesterday, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that Nintendo did show off brand-new gameplay footage of Zelda Wii U in action. The bad news is that footage was 13 seconds long and only consisted of Link riding Epona through what appears to be the same field we've seen in previous glimpses at the game. You can watch the brief clip starting at the 3:23 mark in the video below.

That was it, alongside the words "2016". No concrete release details. Not an official name. Almost nothing.

Nintendo has previously said their stance is promote upcoming games rather than ones that are coming out further in the future, but if that's the case why even mention the game at all during the Nintendo Direct. There is little point in showing off the game without providing new details, but that's exactly what Nintendo did. The footage simply served as a reminder that the game is coming next year.

Not that fans needed a reminder. Legend of Zelda Wii U will likely be the last major release for the Wii U before Nintendo moves on to focus on their new, mysterious NX console. With that in mind, one might think Nintendo would want to create as much anticipation around the game as possible.

But Nintendo always marches to the beat of their own drum. They will do things their way, even if it makes little sense to the wider world. That's what makes Nintendo...Nintendo. As infuriating as it is, we wouldn't have it any other way.
