OnePlus One earned a special place in the hearts of Android tinkerers and developers and the device has a proud successor in the OnePlus 2 handset.

The OnePlus 2 followed in the footsteps of the OnePlus One, but one thing was missing to make it as popular as the previous model: CyanogenMod. Good news comes to those who wept for this lackluster aspect of the OnePlus 2, as the handset appeared in the CyanogenMod official Git repository.

It is no less true that a section of XDA developers already crafted noteworthy ports of the OS for the OnePlus 2, but the recent unveiling brings another game to the table. This happens because, theoretically, every future build that leaves the repository is backed by the community, and this means a lot of support and quality control from the cohort of members.

In other words, the end user who installs CyanogenMod will get a lot more heavily-tested, quality features from the open-source port due to the support from the community.

In a nutshell, the love-hate relationship between CyanogenMod and OnePlus reads like this: the OnePlus One handset launched with CyanogenMod onboard. CyanogenMod was an ambitious Android Open Source Project (AOSP) ROM, heavily supported by the Android coders. Unfortunately, it faced a significant series of issues, which led to its "ostracizing" from the community, and official support stopped.

The breakup came abruptly, due to different visions from the handset manufacturer and software provider.

"Two new companies are trying to do crazy stuff, a lot of people collide," Cyanogen's chief technology officer, Steve Kondik affirmed.

After the mishap, OnePlus decided to use its proprietary Oxygen OS, yet a number of courageous developers kept working on porting CyanogenMod to newer OnePlus devices.

It should be noted that the repository already sports as much as two separate versions of CyanogenMod. The first, the CyanogenMod 12.2, was built on Android 5.1.1. The second one, however, is more recent as it makes use of CM 13, also known as the Android 6.0 Marshmallow code base.

This means that the future builds from the repository will bring to OnePlus 2 users the essence of the best Android OS components, plus the CyanogenMod additional features.
