Fans have been waiting for news on the return of Samurai Jack for a long, long time. Rumors have circulated for years about a possible return for the show either in the form of a new season or a movie, but today, it's official: Samurai Jack is getting a new season, and it's coming next year.

Creator Genndy Tartakovsky will be returning for the brand new season in 2016. It's currently set to air during Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, specifically during Toonami, which airs on Adult Swim every Saturday night and consists of anime and other action-oriented cartoons. Production on the show is currently underway at Cartoon Network Studios in Los Angeles, according to the cable channel.

That's not all. A brief teaser for the new season has been released, and it shows what appears to be a new look for Jack. As fans are well aware, the series revolved around Jack, a samurai from the past, being flung into a future ruled by the evil dark lord Aku. Jack sought to return to the past in order to prevent Aku from taking over the world, but every time the samurai got close to doing so, the opportunity seemed to slip through his fingers.

This new look for Jack seems to indicate something has changed since the last time we saw our hero. If the character in white is indeed Jack, he looks to be the light side equivalent of Aku. Perhaps Jack has become a god of some kind?

We'll have to wait until 2016 to find out. The original show ended in 2004 after four seasons and no real conclusion, leaving the door open for more stories. IDW's recent Samurai Jack comic series sought to continue the show with new storylines. Now that the show is returning, it's currently unknown how the tales told in the comic will affect the story of the new season or if the comic series will continue. Reruns for the show aired on Boomerang for some time, before eventually making their way to the relaunched Toonami block in 2014. You can check out the teaser video below.
