The site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine has long been off-limits to the vast majority of the population. After a massive explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant sent radioactive particles into the atmosphere in 1986 and the following evacuation, few have entered the now abandoned plant or the nearby town of Pripyat.

Thankfully, that's where the power of virtual reality comes in. Soon you'll be able to explore the ruins of Chernobyl and Pripyat from the comfort of your own home in a new VR experience coming from The Farm 51, no hazmat suits required.

The team at The Farm 51 will be recreating large parts of the area surrounding Chernobyl in-game with photo-realistic accuracy, using the team's impressive graphics tech. By taking thousands of high-quality photos of the area, the team then brings those images to life in engine. Players will step into the shoes of a documentary crew member exploring the ruins, allowing them to explore the site of a nuclear disaster first hand. So far the project is simply titled "Chernobyl VR Project."

But don't think that this will just be a guided tour. A trailer for the experience shows character's wielding guns and some kind of supernatural forces at work, which means this may be more of a game in a traditional sense than it appears to be. Looks like jump scares are to be expected.

The Farm 51 is looking at releasing the project on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear. Though this won't be the first game set in Chernobyl, it certainly looks like it might be the most immersive, and accurate, depiction of the world's most infamous nuclear disaster. You can check out a trailer for the experience below.
