If you are a PlayStation 4 gamer who doesn't yet have PlayStation Plus, this weekend is your chance to take some of the console's multiplayer-focused games for a spin free of charge.

Online multiplayer will be free for all PlayStation 4 users this weekend starting on Friday, Dec. 11 at 12:01 a.m. PT to Sunday Dec. 13 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Usually, online multiplayer for PS4 requires a PlayStation Plus subscription, which costs $10 for a single month, $18 for three months or $50 for a year. PlayStation Plus also grants subscribers discounts in the PlayStation Store and two free PS4 games per month. Online multiplayer is free on the PlayStation 3 and does not require PS Plus.

Sony is marketing the free weekend with an ad featuring Star Wars Battlefront at the forefront, along with other multiplayer-focused titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Destiny. That makes sense at first glance, but when you consider Star Wars Battlefront is almost exclusively an online multiplayer-only game (and Destiny is an online-only game), Sony's marketing is a little baffling.

Who exactly is going to be playing Destiny or Star Wars Battlefront this weekend that didn't already have PS Plus? Are new users going to rent or buy Destiny or Star Wars Battlefront just to play for this weekend? Come Sunday night, those games will be essentially unplayable.

Obviously, Sony is hoping those who don't yet own PS Plus will want to subscribe after getting a taste of online multiplayer, but marketing two online-only games for the event is a little strange. Regardless, it would be interesting to see how many PS Plus subscribers Sony does gain after a promotional weekend like this.
