A new Japanese Godzilla film is on the way, and now thanks to an official poster we have our first look at the famous movie monster's new look.

You can see the monster's new look in the header image or in the full poster below, but it's safe to say that this Godzilla will be unlike what we've seen before. The image is reminiscent of the original 1954 design for the creature, though the jagged teeth, small eyes and skin texture are all new (and creepy). It has also been confirmed that this will be the largest Godzilla yet, surpassing the massive 355 feet tall Godzilla seen in Gareth Edward's American Godzilla film last year.

The poster doesn't only reveal Godzilla's new look, but also a release date and a possible clue about the film's plot. Shin-Gojira, as the film is titled in Japan, will be releasing on July 19, 2016. It's unclear when the film will release overseas. As for what the text at the top of the poster says, fans on Godzilla fan-site Toho Kingdom are saying it translates to "Japan vs. Godzilla." When it's released, it will be the first Japanese Godzilla film in more than a decade.

Both the tagline and the look of the creature matches up with what special effects director Shinji Higuchi has previously said about the vision for the new film, which bears the english title of Godzilla: Resurgence. He has said this new Godzilla will be the "scariest yet", with other quotes from those involved with the film pointing towards a movie that seeks to return to the character's horror roots.

While it's not yet confirmed, it seems safe to assume Godzilla may not fight another monster in this latest film. If the filmmakers are looking to the original 1954 film for inspiration, returning the character to his origin as a terrifying, nuclear force of nature that mankind must overcome would certainly do the trick.

The new poster comes not too long after the announcement that another famous Japanese monster, the giant fire-breathing turtle Gamera, would also be making a comeback in Japanese cinema.

What do you think? Do like the new design, or do you prefer the Godzilla seen in Hollywood's latest reboot? Let us know in the comments below.
