Godzilla has taken on numerous forms over the years, both physically and as a character. New looks for the character brought new changes in his personality, as Godzilla went from terrifying force of destruction, to hero, to something in between.

Yesterday we got a glimpse at Japan's latest Godzilla design for the upcoming film Shin-Gojira (or Godzilla: Resurgence in English), and a new teaser trailer for the film seems to confirm one thing: Godzilla isn't going to be friendly this time around.

The brief teaser (which you can see at the bottom of this article) mostly features shaky cam footage of scared Japanese citizens running for their lives. At the end, the familiar roar of Godzilla can be heard before the release date appears on screen.

It's worth nothing that Godzilla has had various roars over the years, all variations of the original one used in the original 1954 film. Since the first announcement of Godzilla Resurgence, those involved in the project have continually stated out the film seeks to return to Godzilla's origins as a nuclear metaphor and force of destruction. Everything we've seen so far looks to draw heavily from the 1954 film. Godzilla's roar in the teaser is that of the original Godzilla, a teaser poster of Godzilla's footprint featured a trilobite embedded within it (another nod to the 1954 film), and Godzilla's new look, though much more grotesque than the original design, mimics it in a number of key ways.

Whether or not this footage of people fleeing in terror is actually from the film is hard to say. It could just be a teaser video that isn't actually a part of the movie. If it is taken from the film, it's a sign that this will not be the type of Godzilla film fans have grown accustomed to.
