Director Bryan Singer is in full-on hype mode this week thanks to the continued press parade for the upcoming film X-Men: Apocalypse. In addition to the brand new trailer that dropped this morning, Singer’s revealed a new poster, and Empire managed to get him to break down the trailer.

The new poster features Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse staring down a crumbling human skull. As in, he’s the one doing the crumbling. Apocalypse, of course, is the eponymous villain of the newest installment in the X-Men movie franchise. He seems to have a silver-tongue personality capable of recruiting and leading several mutants both new and old — including Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

Additionally, Empire spoke with Singer prior to the new trailer’s release about specific little tidbits inside — including a little bit about the mysterious character most folks believe to be Caliban, the recruitment of Storm, Jean Grey’s visions and the return of Alex Summers and his younger brother, Scott — who is apparently completely blind in this iteration of the classic Cyclops character.

“I like that you just see bits and pieces,” Singer reportedly told Empire about the look of Apocalypse and his often-obscured appearance in the trailer. “It forces you to look at not just his face, but his costume, the scale, the strangeness, the inscription, the technology. It makes you want to lean around the corner to get a better look.”

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to release in theaters on May 27, 2016.
