Xiaomi officially took the wraps off its new Redmi Note Prime as expected, unveiling the smartphone in India where it will sell exclusively through Amazon and Mi.com.

The Redmi Note Prime comes as a budget-friendly offering, but it nonetheless packs good specifications for its category. Cheap mid-range smartphones have come to offer more value for money in recent times, and the Redmi Note Prime can definitely hold its own. Moreover, Xiaomi is also reiterating its commitment to the Indian scene with its latest handset.

Following the Redmi 2 Prime, the new Xiaomi Redmi Note Prime is now the second "Made in India" smartphone, as it was manufactured in collaboration with Foxconn in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

When it comes to specifications, the new Redmi Note Prime comes with a 5.5-inch IPS HD display (1,280 x 720 pixels) and packs a 1.2GHz 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor paired with 2 GB of RAM (LPDDR3).

Other specs include 16 GB of built-in storage, microSD support for extra memory of up to 32 GB, a 13-megapixel main camera with autofocus and LED flash, a 5-megapixel selfie cam, and a 3,100 mAh battery.

"The power efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor coupled with the battery saving features of MIUI, has enabled us to achieve our most impressive battery performance yet," Xiaomi notes, adding that the Redmi Note Prime should last for 14 hours of internet browsing, 38 hours of talk time, 60 hours of music playback and 775 hours on standby.

On the connectivity front, the Redmi Note Prime covers 3G, 4G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB 2.0, FM Radio, GPS/ A-GPS and USB-OTG. The smartphone also comes with dual-SIM capabilities.

The new Xiaomi Redmi Note Prime will launch at Rs. 8,499 (about $127) and will be exclusively available from Xiaomi's website, as well as Amazon India, starting at 10 a.m. IST on Tuesday, Dec. 15. This price tag will likely pit the Redmi Note Prime against the Lenovo K3 Note, a popular choice among budget shoppers in India. Considering Xiaomi's success so far, the Redmi Note Pro is expected to be a hit.
