Samsung has announced the Portable SSD T3, a palm-sized external solid state drive (SSD) that can offer up to 2TB of storage capacity.

The latest Portable SSD T3 is made with Samsung's proprietary SSD TurboWrite and Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology. The external drive offers advanced performance by enabling consumers to easily and quickly transfer and store large multimedia files across a number of devices.

"Following the successful worldwide launch of the Portable SSD T1 in 2015, we made several significant upgrades to the T3 based on the feedback and needs of our customers," said Un-Soo Kim, a senior VP at Samsung Electronics.

Computer users are increasingly dependent on external storage sources to store large amount of data, which can also be used on several devices without any hassle.

Many users want the convenience of carrying around their external hard drives. Samsung has designed the Portable SSD T3 keeping in mind the increasing mobile lifestyle of people. At only 50 grams, or 1.76 ounces, the T3 is lightweight and smaller when compared to a regular business card.

SSDs are also safer than HDDs, as the former do not include moving parts. Users can have peace of mind with SSDs as data stored are not lost or damaged from occasional drops and bumps. The internal frame and the metal case of the Samsung SSD is also shock-resistant, adding to the durability of the T3. Samsung claims that the portable drive can withstand a force of 1500G and can also survive if dropped accidentally from about two meters.

A Thermal Guard, which is integrated in the external drives, prevents it from overheating in high temperatures. Samsung is also offering a three-year warranty on the Portable SSD T3.

With the USB 3.1 interface, the T3 can provide read and write speeds of up to 450MB per second, around four times quicker in comparison to external HDD options.

The latest USB 3.1 Type-C connector supports a number of devices running on Windows 7 (or later), Mac OS 10.7 (or later) and Android 4.4 KitKat (or later).

The Korean company also revealed that the latest external drive can be used with the Samsung Portable SSD Android mobile app that assists users to change their passwords and check the remaining storage capacity of the drive.

The set up process of the T3 is very simple and customers can protect their data behind AES 256-bit hardware encryption. In case the drive gets lost, the data will remain inaccessible to unauthorized personnel.

The Portable SSD T3 will be initially launched in February this year in the U.S., Korea, China and select European nations. Samsung will launch the T3 in other regions in the near term. The T3 will be available with 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacity.

The price of the Samsung external drive remains unknown for now. However, the T3 will not come at a cheap price tag. Nevertheless, SSD prices dropped recently, making them even more attractive when compared to HDDs.
