The second season of HBO's "True Detective" seems to be picking up steam this week with more casting news and a synopsis of the plot. The show quickly became a runaway hit since its debut earlier in the year, and it looks like HBO is eyeing some high-profile actors for the next season.

While Vince Vaughn is in talks to play the series' central antagonist, a few more names have been dropped as possible cast members. Elizabeth Moss of "Mad Men" fame is rumored to be playing a tough, no-nonsense California sheriff that has turned to gambling and alcohol. It looks like the front-runners for two of the three slots as detective are vet actors Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch. Also in the hunt for a key role on the show is "The Killing's" Michelle Forbes. Unfortunately HBO had no comment on casting decisions.

However, TheWrap did manage to land a breakdown of the second season's plot. Here it is:

"The second season of 'True Detective' will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought."

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto is hard at work on the scripts for next season, and according to him, season two will feature four leads, including the antagonist. The show is also scouting directors to see who will be a good fit for the series. Last season, Cary Fukunaga was at the helm for every episode, but the production does not expect a filmmaker to commit to the entire second season. This time around, they will try and find several directors, each tackling two to three episodes.

The plot thickens when Ben Caspar's 52-year old corpse is found along a remote stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway. The body is laden with satanic symbols etched on his chest. Soon it is discovered that the politician had a taste for rough sex and may possibly have dabbled in the occult.

It looks like "True Detective" is maintaining its Emmy nominated pedigree by attaching A-list talent to the show's second season. We will keep you posted on any new casting information about the show's second season.
