If you love the design of the iPhone 6s but feel that its 4.7-inch display is just too big, Apple is rumored to release a new four-inch iPhone 6c in the spring. Images of what is reportedly a prototype of the smartphone have leaked.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone in January 2007, the smartphone looked very different from the most popular smartphones on the market at that time. The BlackBerry Curve 8300 and Treo 750 and 755p all featured 2.5-inch plastic displays above physical QWERTY keyboards.

The iPhone bucked all trends and featured a large (at the time) 3.5-inch glass display that used a software keyboard for text entry that only appeared when users needed to use it and disappeared when not in use, which made watching movies and Web browsing on the device more enjoyable compared with doing so on Apple's biggest rivals, since there was no way of increase the viewing area because of the physical QWERTY keyboards, something Steve Jobs loved pointing out during his keynote.

While Android smartphone makers quickly copied the iPhone's design, they also began to increase the size of their displays, a move that Jobs deemed dead on arrival, claiming consumers would not want to carry handsets with four-plus-inch displays and boasting that the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone was the perfect size. A year after his death, Apple increased its display size with the release of the iPhone 5,  packing in a larger four-inch display which, up to this day, many iPhone fans still feel was the perfect size.

The last four-inch iPhone Apple released was the iPhone 5s in September 2013, but now, fans of smaller iPhones will reportedly get their wishes answered when the company returns to that form factor with its rumored iPhone 6c, expected to be announced in the spring.

A prototype of what is reportedly the iPhone 6c has leaked and shows the four-inch smartphone will inherit the iPhone 6s' much-loved design. The handset looks like a mini version of Apple's current flagship iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, and unlike 2013's iPhone 5c, will include a Touch ID-equipped home button.

Just as Apple offered the iPhone 5c in several color options, it is believed that the company is planning on giving the handset similar metallic-colored hues. The iPhone 6c is expected to feature a four-inch Retina Display, snappy A9 processor and 2 GB of RAM, and will pack in a 1,642 mAh battery.

The iPhone 6c is rumored to be announced at an Apple press event scheduled at some time in March and will reportedly debut alongside the Apple Watch 2.

As always, we'll keep you posted on any new iPhone 6c news as it becomes available.
