Last year, Double Fine Productions announced that it planned on launching a crowdsourced campaign to help fund Psychonauts 2. That campaign raised over $3 million that went toward the game's development, which makes the Psychonauts sequel one of the top 10 highest crowdfunded games of all time.

Psychonauts 2 is now in production, and fans eagerly awaiting it finally got an idea of what its story is about, thanks to a Reddit AMA with Double Fine founder and CEO Tim Schafer.

"In the intervening years I've been keeping a document of ideas going with new mental worlds and story ideas going in as I think of them," wrote Schafer. "So I'm starting this game with the rough story figured out, ideas for brains and mechanics, and an Engine. In Psychonauts 2, Raz will finally get to go to Psychonauts headquarters — his lifelong dream. There he can see Sasha and Milla in their natural environment — international espionage. But he finds several things strange about the organization."

Schafer continued to describe the game's plot.

"While Truman Zanotto was missing, several changes to the direction of the organization were made by his second in command," he wrote. "Funding was cut from traditional psychic research and peacekeeping, and redirected to unorthodox, fringe endeavors, including the discredited practice of necromancy. Raz soon uncovers sinister things at work in the shadows of Psychonauts headquarters, including double agents and evils of the past. Raz's own family history plays a pivotal part in the story, and Raz must confront the roots of the curse placed on his family once and for all. And also deal with this whole 'girlfriend' term and what it really means."

Raz will also have some new powers, mixed with the powers he had in the first game.

Schafer continued to answer questions about the first Psychonauts game and even spoke about some of his personal favorite games, such as Katamari Damacy and Hohokum. He even discussed his inspiration for Psychonauts, as well as talked about the titles' art style.

Double Fine also has plans to create a virtual reality title for PlayStation VR called Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. That game will be a stand-alone in the franchise, but will cover story details that happen between the first and second games. Meanwhile, the original Psychonauts arrives on the PlayStation 4 this spring.
