Buick is looking to be cool again as it introduced the elegant-looking Avista sports coupe concept at an auto show in Detroit.

On Sunday, Buick gave the world a glimpse of its sporty Avista coupe concept a day prior to the North American International Auto Show.

The Avista is a 2 + 2 coupe concept that runs a twin-turbo charged V-6, which can notch up 400 horsepower, thanks to an eight-speed auto transmission. If this sounds familiar, it is because the Avista has adopted several design sensibilities from the Avenir, which Buick debuted in 2015 in Detroit.

"The Avista embodies the dynamic soul of Buick. It is a modern expression of the brand's heritage of sophisticated performance, communicated with beautiful elegance," says Duncan Aldred, vice president of global Buick sales, service, and marketing.

Buick describes the rear-wheel drive coupe concept as a "contemporary grand tourer" and the company's executive director, Bryan Nesbitt, opines that the vehicle has an "elegant simplicity," which is reflective of Buick's timeless designs.

The continuous body lines on the Avista extend from the front of the vehicle to its rear. This is suggestive of motion and bears a semblance to the designing sensibilities Buick introduced from its Avenir concept, extending it to the production of the 2017 LaCrosse.

Moreover, there are no B-pillars, which are traditionally present between the door and the rear side windows of a car, this further enriches the coupe concept's fluid profile.

The concept coupe also boasts a 110.7-inch wheelbase and 20-inch aluminum wheels. The wheels have color-toned accents that complement the Dark Sapphire Jewel exterior of the car.

The work on the Avista - a labor of love - took Buick over a year and the concept coupe was developed in Warren.

However, judging by what the General Motors CEO Mary Barra divulged to reporters, it seems that Buick does not have any immediate plans of building the Avista for the masses.

Barra let on that while the company would "love to" build the car, it is merely a design concept which is a representation of the direction the brand will take in the future.

"It's such a beautiful vehicle, but it also ties performance and that coming together really captures Buick and where we're headed," said Barra.

Irrespective of whether Buick chooses to build the Avista or not, the concept coupe is quite the show stopper and could inspire more designs.
