James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, a movie starring a talking tree and a gun-wielding raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper, is no stranger to outlandish characters. It's part of what made the first film so much fun.

That being said, a new rumor has one of Marvel's most outlandish characters ever set to appear in the sequel.

Geek.com reports (citing sources close to the site and the production of the film) that Gunn might be bringing out one of Marvel's biggest characters for the film, and we mean that in a literal sense. The site says they have reason to believe that Ego the living planet will be making an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

If you don't know who Ego the living planet is, well, he's a living planet. He has a face ... and a beard ... and eyes. He can also talk. He was granted sentience by the Marvel character known as the Stranger, and since then, he (it?) has both opposed and teamed up with various Marvel heroes over the years. Rocket Raccoon recently traveled to Ego to help him get rid of a nasty case of space lice. Ego also has a bad habit of trying to eat other planets, and once got eaten himself by none other than Galactus, the devourer of worlds.

In other words, Ego sounds like the perfect kind of cosmic character to add to Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only is he more than a little obscure to all but the most diehard Marvel fans, but his outlandish nature fits in perfectly with the rest of the cast. The only question is: what will his role be? Will he appear as a significant villain? A fun cameo? A potential ally? All three?

Maybe he won't appear at all. It will likely be a while before we know for sure, as the film is still a ways off. Still, if Ego is set to appear in the movie, we can't wait to learn what other crazy characters and plot points will come along with him.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to release in theaters on May 5, 2017. You can check out the full lineup of Marvel and DC movies here.
