The most recent Windows 10 Redstone Build 14251 could have a Linux subsystem, packing in LXss.sys plus LXCore.sys, says a renowned Windows hacker.

WalkingCat has initially revealed the mystical Linux subsystem files in a Twitter post.

what the hell ? Windows 10 14251 has lxcore.sys and lxss.sys ? aren't they part of Project Astoria ? and for Mobile only ?

The naming convention looks nearly the same as the Android subsystem from Project Astoria, ADSS.SYS. Judging from the names of the newly unearthed files, “LXss” could very well be the “Linux Subsystem.”

The uncovered files are speculated to signify the return of Project Astoria, since Build 14251 is the first OneCore version of the operating system developed for mobile, desktop, Xbox One and HoloLens.

Among the reasons that could have triggered the possible decline of the Project Astoria was that Android apps would only operate on Windows 10 Mobile. Making these apps Universal Apps could then make sense.

On top of that, there is a big chance that Microsoft could be cooking up Linux system support for a future project.

Whatever the reason is, only time will tell how the Redmond-based company intends to use these files. We have yet to hear a confirmation from the company regarding this matter. For the moment, it is prudent to take these rumors with a pinch of salt.

Microsoft announced Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14251 in a blog post.

While the new build does not bring in new, noteworthy features, Microsoft says that it does come with a slew of fixes for bugs found by its engineering team. These include the following:

— an issue which causes PC games to crash when the user changes from windowed mode to full screen upon launch or upon game resolution change.

— an issue in which File Explorer crashes when DPI settings are at 175 percent.

— applications, including Magnifier, Narrator and third-party assistive technologies crashing intermittently.
