Remember the "Bad Boy" films? Those over-the-top action fests that starred Martin Lawrence and Will Smith blowing lots of stuff up? There just might be a third one in the works, at least according to Lawrence.

Lawrence said "Bad Boys 3" is definitely real while talking with late night host Conan O'Brien Wednesday night. For all of those who completely forgot about "Bad Boys" as a film franchise, that's okay. "Bad Boys II" came out more than a decade ago in 2003, with the original film releasing in theaters in 1995 -- an eight year gap. If "Bad Boys 3" is coming, it will be releasing a staggering 20 years after the first film. That of course isn't stopping Hollywood from attempting to bring it back.

"I just talked to Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday. He said it's real," Lawrence told Conan. "They're working on the script. They're getting close. It all looks good."

It's not much to go on, and sadly that's about all Lawrence had to say on the matter, besides saying that the script would potentially "re-team him" with co-star Will Smith. He said almost as much back in 2010, when he told MTV he had discussed the film with past "Bad Boys" director Michael Bay.

"It's real realistic," he said four years ago. "We've talked about Bad Boys 3. [...] I met with Michael Bay, and he said he's onboard too -- so it's real."

No doubt there is work being done behind the scenes to get a third "Bad Boys" film made. Sony hired David Guggenheim in Dec. 2013 to write the script for the third film in the franchise, but news about the script for "Bad Boys 3" goes all the way back to 2009.

At this rate, will the film ever see the light of day? Probably, as Hollywood has a reputation these days of never letting any potential franchise rest in peace, even one that has been dead for nearly a decade. Will "Bad Boys" be the same without Michael Bay at the helm, though?

After all, Bay gained his reputation as the master of explosions in a large part because of the two action films. To see him absent for the end of the trilogy and replaced by man behind "Pirates of the Caribbean" would seem wrong. Bay has been busy with the "Transformers" franchise, but there have been rumors that he may sit out on directing the inevitable "Transformers 5."

Let's just hope we don't have to wait another couple years to learn more about what "Bad Boys 3" could possibly have in store.
