In a surprising turn of events, North America is actually set to receive a new Shiren the Wanderer game. Specifically, Shiren The Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate is scheduled to release for the PlayStation Vita this summer.

This turn of events is shocking for several reasons, but perhaps mostly because the franchise is typically ignored here. Though there have been several Shiren the Wanderer entries in the Mystery Dungeon franchise, only two have been released in North America — one on the Nintendo DS and one on the Nintendo Wii. That’s the first and third in the series, respectively.

That doesn’t mean we’ve gone entirely without Mystery Dungeon otherwise. The dungeon-crawling roguelike is typically paired up with other franchises here, and perhaps most famously for the various Pokémon-branded titles. It’s really just the original characters that have been given the cold shoulder when it comes to localization — which is where Aksys Games has stepped in to save the day this time.

It’s unclear what exactly might be different about the North American release, but Aksys teases that it’s “an enhanced and expanded update” of the original game. The “enhanced” may well only refer to graphics, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a few new additions to the game as well. The underlying game of exploring dungeons remains unchanged if screen shots from the announcement are to be believed, so it’s likely a few quality of life adjustments.

Though it released several years ago in Japan on the Nintendo DS (that’s how old the base game is; it wasn’t even released on the Nintendo 3DS), Shiren The Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate is set to release exclusively on PlayStation Vita on July 26, 2016 in North America with both a physical and a retail release. Really, the Vita is a smart choice, given the platform’s basically perfect for roguelikes on the go.
