It is hard to believe that "Ghostbusters" is 30 years old this year, despite the movie seeming like it was released last week. The beloved movie, directed by Ivan Reitman, struck a chord with audiences back in 1984, and it has continued to gain popularity as time passes.

The sequel, "Ghostbusters 2," was released in the summer of 1989 and is seen as inferior to the original by die hard fans. That is not to say it was bad, but that the magic of the first film was not there for the sequel.

In the years that followed, there were tons of false starts, rumors and buzz that "Ghostbusters 3" was most definitely on the horizon. The movie took on an iconic feel as the years passed, with the characters from the sci-fi comedy becoming some of the greatest ever assembled. Mixing comedy with sci-fi is one of the most difficult tasks for a director, but "Ghostbusters" broke all the rules and solidified itself as the template for the sci-fi comedy.

Most recently, "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig has been circling a third "Ghostbusters" with an all-female version of the paranormal scientists planned. When talking to ComingSoon.net, director Ivan Reitman had this to say about a third movie:

"I am very involved. I'm a producer of the film. I wasn't giving it all up. I suddenly felt that Ghostbusters didn't necessarily need me as a director, at least I didn't need to direct Ghostbusters, let me put it that way. Having done the other two and with the passing of Harold and with Bill Murray seeming disinterested being in it, I thought it was better for me just to produce it and to make sure we're going to have the quality and style of what is appropriate for another version of that film. But the franchise could benefit from somebody else's point of view. I've done it twice before and it will be great to get somebody else to lend a hand as well."

"I'd say it's very much in the development stage and it's now caught up in the middle of studio stuff," Reitman finally explained.

Hopefully we will get a third installment before the 40th anniversary of the original...
