Oculus and Frontier announced that the heavily appraised Elite Dangerous game will be available for the Oculus Rift on launch day.

The VR headset will reach its first owners on March 28 and will feature support for multiple apps and games, including deep space adventure exploration title Elite Dangerous.

It should be noted that the only people who will get to toy around with Oculus Rift at the end of the month are those who preordered the hardware early on from the official webpage. Should you preorder now, your device will be delivered sometime in July.

When gaming company Frontier started working on Elite Dangerous, it had already envisioned a VR future for the game. What is more, the Sci-Fi title comes with cross-platform multiplayer, meaning that you can share the experience with players on consoles, PCs, Macs and other Oculus devices.

Even if an existing variant of Elite Dangerous is out there, it will be updated to match the requirements of Oculus Rift near the launch of the headset. Frontier also points out that game owners who want to join the Oculus experience can easily do so with no hassle. All they have to do is snatch a free code from the Frontier Store.

Elite Dangerous is an AAA game that merges a player-driven narrative featuring realistic combat simulation with the open-world depth of a space MMO.

The Universe of the game is a harsh future modeled after our galaxy. You begin the game armed with only a starship and a small number of space credits. How you will manage to rise and become one of the galaxy's most notorious pilots is entirely up to you. Getting to elite status will require time, patience and skill, but it will be extremely rewarding.

The developers claim that the Elite Dangerous universe is much more immersive in virtual reality, and we have all reasons to take their word for it. Players can take the helm of numerous space ships, explore billions of star systems and win an ever growing number of battles before beating the game.

The title already draws comparison to No Man's Sky, another Sci-Fi exploration game that has the potential of making VR headsets the entertainment tools of tomorrow. Frontier refused to say whether or not the game will land on Sony's PlayStation VR, but what we know is that it works great on HTC Vive.
