Kodak Alaris announced the release of a new photo app on Friday that celebrates important moments by turning them into stories.

While there is already an app for saving and sharing selfies and other photos - it's called Instagram - this app called Kodak Moments provides users with tools for visual storytelling.

Users start by uploading a photo from their camera roll, Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox or Flickr account. They are then prompted to tell their story by writing text about what they want their friends and family to know about this specific moment. The user can also pull a blockquote from their narrative to be highlighted with the photo to further make their story unique.

These Moments can then be shared with others on the social network, or on their other social media accounts like Facebook or Twitter. All Moments are stored with the original image quality, and the app makes it easy for users to connect to a Kodak Picture printing kiosk so that they can order physical prints. There is also the option to order copies and pick them up in store or have them delivered to the users' house. The system is ad-free.

Ditching the hashtags and filters, Kodak Moments lets users focus on sharing their stories and more meaningful moments rather than their latest selfie.

"The Kodak Moments App is for people who want to tell their stories as a form of self-expression and identity. It's for people who want their important photos to rise above the clutter and stand out by creating visual stories," Nicki Zongrone, president of Kodak Alaris' Imaging Consumer Division, said in a press release. "With the multidimensional storytelling capabilities of the Kodak Moments App, we bring the idea of Kodak Moments into the digital age, bridging the physical and digital ways that people share their memories."

To celebrate the release of the app, Kodak Alaris teamed up with artist Marcos Lutyens to create an interactive installation of the app at SXSW 2016. Called "The Memory Observatory," viewers will be able to transform their favorite photo into a journey that consists of colors, sounds and smells when the installation opens on March 12 at the Austin Convention Center.

Kodak Moments is now available to download for free for iOS, with the Android version expected to be released this spring.
