LG is preparing to release its 2016 flagship smartphone, the LG G5 in the U.S. in early April. Retailer Best Buy has created a new landing page that shows it will begin taking preorders for the handset beginning on March 18.

Samsung is just coming off of its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge global release weekend and reports are already claiming the pair has been an even bigger success than last year's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. While Samsung is basking in the glow, one of its top rivals is planning to release its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge challenger in the form of the LG G5.

LG recently announced that the LG G5 would be released in Canada on April 8 and later confirmed that the modular smartphone would be released in early April in the U.S.

There was speculation that April 8 could also be the LG G5's U.S. release date and now Best Buy is adding fuel to the fire by announcing it will open up preorders for the smartphone on March 18 on a new landing page on its website.

The LG G5 features a 5.3-inch 2,560 x 1,440 Quad JD display with a pixel density of 554 pixels per inch (ppi) and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4 GB of RAM. The handset includes 32 GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that supports up to 200 GB microSD cards.

In terms of camera capabilities, the LG G5 includes a dual-lens 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS (optical image stabilization), laser autofocus, and 6-megapixel front-facing shooter for selfies and video chat. The smartphone ships with a 2,800 mAh removable battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support, which provides up to 83 percent charge in only 30 minutes.

In order to differentiate the LG G5 from other flagship smartphones, LG has made its handset modular, which allows users to add hardware accessories to the smartphone by sliding out the bottom of the device's metal case. The company has also announced three accessories, an extra removable battery, camera add-on, and a Hi-Fi audio player.
