Sony finally unveiled the PlayStation VR at the 2016 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, with the device to be shipped sometime in October with a price tag of $399.

PlayStation VR, formerly known as Project Morpheus, will be released with a bit of delay as Sony had to take time to make sure that the virtual reality headset was ready. In addition to the details of the device, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO Andrew House revealed at the same event a partnership that could immediately propel the PlayStation VR's popularity to great heights.

House said that Sony has teamed up with Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm for the development of an exclusive virtual reality version of Star Wars: Battlefront for the PlayStation VR.

"This will be a Star Wars: Battlefront gaming experience like nothing else," House said, adding that players will be able to transport themselves into a galaxy far, far away with the title.

The partnership was confirmed through a tweet by the official PlayStation account.

No further details, screenshots or videos of any kind on the Star Wars: Battlefront game for the PlayStation VR were revealed. The reactions on Twitter to the announcement have been mixed, though most have been positive, to say the least.

The PlayStation VR will compete with other virtual reality headsets Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The price tag of $600 and $800 respectively, however, could be seen as steep, especially as the devices will also need to be used with a powerful PC.

For the full PlayStation VR experience, gamers will need to spend a total of less than $900 on the device, the PlayStation Eye, a Move controller and the PlayStation 4 console.
