It's no secret that EA and DICE's take on Star Wars: Battlefront was a disappointment for longtime fans. Even when you ignore the blatant advertising for the game's $50 Season Pass, EA's Battlefront just doesn't feel like a Battlefront game.

The class system was completely watered down, there were barely any maps to choose from, and only a few modes ever came close to the same scale as the original Battlefront games. It's not a bad game on its own — but EA's Battlefront doesn't live up to its predecessors.

That's why a group of dedicated Star Wars fans are taking matters into their own hands: Star Wars: Galaxy in Turmoil, developed by Frontwire Studios, is meant to fill the void that the Free Radical-developed and tragically-canceled Battlefront III left behind.

Not much is known about the project at this point, save for Frontwire's promise to bring the original Battlefront experience back to gamers — but given what the team has shown off so far, Galaxy in Turmoil definitely has a lot of potential.

Just don't expect to play the full version anytime soon — there's still quite a bit of work to be done before Galaxy in Turmoil is ready to really play. The latest build of the game still uses old Battlefront III assets, and most of the original assets (such as character models and multiplayer maps) are still works-in-progress. That being said, Galaxy in Turmoil is the first serious attempt to try and rebuild Battlefront III into something new — and judging from the first few screen shots, the game is off to a good start, even in these early stages.

Unfortunately, it may all be for naught: Disney is notoriously protective of its properties, especially a franchise as huge as Star Wars. On top of that, EA also has an exclusive contract to develop any and all Star Wars games for the next several years — and while Frontwire isn't looking to make a profit off of Galaxy in Turmoil, it may not have the final say.

Hopefully, EA and Disney won't have any trouble with a free, downloadable game ... but only time will tell. In the meanwhile, you can download the latest build of Star Wars: Galaxy in Turmoil from Frontwire Studios' ModDB page.
