BBC America announced on Jan. 8 that it has green-lit production for the adaptation of an original scripted series by Max Landis, and based on Douglas Adams' "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." Now, the straight-to-series order has cast one of its lead actors and it is none other than multi-awarded actor Elijah Wood.

Wood will be taking on the role of Detective Dirk Gently's assistant, Todd, who joins him in his outrageous adventures and helps in solving bizarre mysteries in spite of his reluctance to do so. But Todd is no Samwise Gamgee to Dirk Gently's Frodo because he is more upfront with how he handles things and is blunt with his words.

"I am not your Watson, a**hole. I am not available for side-kicking on something I am not involved with. I am my own messed up person with my own messed up problems," Todd tells Dirk.

"Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" already has a "cult favorite" status and has since been adapted into a four-episode mini-series, which aired in 2010 and 2012 on BBC 4.

"Dirk Gently is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else. The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis' brilliant and audacious take on this material, we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans," BBC America President Sarah Barnett expressed.

According to a report, just before his unexpected death, Adams was working on drafts for a novel that sees Gently heading to America for another set of adventures so it would actually make sense that Landis took off from there.

The series is a co-production with AMC Studios, IDW, Circle of Confusion, and Ideate Media. Series creator Max Landis will also serve as the show's writer and executive producer.

"Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is expected to air in Fall 2016.
