After a botched rollout in September, and final debut in October, the chat and video calling app BlackBerry messenger (or BBM) has received its first update. With this update, BBM will now support the Wi-Fi versions of iPad and iPod touch too.

It is evident that larger number of people are getting interested in the app and want to give it a try. After the app was released for iOS and Android devices, the number of users grew from 60 million to 80 million.

The update also includes "Tell Your Friends" feature. it allows you to view contacts who are already using BBM and are also your friends on social networking sites. For inviting them to chat on BBM, you will need to log into your favorite social network and browse for a BBM PIN under their name.

The updated version 1.0.4.133 also allows you to quickly share BBM PIN or PIN barcode to a number of social networks, the company announced in a blog post. A battery-related issue on Android devices has also been taken care of in the update.

Other major updates include assigning contacts to categories. If you have a large contact list, you can group your contacts by assigning categories to it. In options, tap Add Category and name it. Next select the contacts that you want to assign to categories.

The journey for the BBM, after it branched out from the Blackberry devices has been mixed. The app files of Android got leaked prior to the official release and the company had to pause the global rollout. Once the app was released officially, it got a overwhelming response and is still managing to find a place in top 20 free apps in Google Play Store.

The BBM app can be downloaded in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store
