Poor Sonic. He's had it rough in recent years, with the majority of his games being butchered by critics and fans alike. It has left fans yearning for the good old days when the blue blur had titles to rival that of Mario, like the original Sonic the Hedgehog, for instance.

This mod for the original Sonic game probably isn't what most fans had in mind. Called Sonic Boomed, the mod from VAdePEGA is a modified version of the original Sonic game, with elements from the universally-hated Sonic Boom subseries.

It's just as painful as it sounds. Sonic Boom imagined a taller Sonic sporting a scarf, bandages and a new (and annoying) attitude. That attitude makes its way into the Sonic Boomed mod, as you'll get to hear Sonic spam annoying phrases from the Sonic Boom game every time he collects a ring, rolls or jumps. Which is to say you'll be hearing Sonic's annoying voice at all times. VAdePEGA has "updated" the original Sonic character model as well in order to stay true to Sonic Boom, so you'll get to see Sonic's new scarf and bandages in all of their pixelated glory.

Watching the video is depressing and terrifying all at the same time, but just like a train wreck, it's impossible not to look away. It's kind of sad that the best part about Sonic as a franchise in 2016 is the official Twitter account for the series, which continues to excel via poking constant fun at itself.

As bad a taste as Sonic Boom left in the mouth of fans, there is still more of it to come for reasons that still aren't entirely clear. Despite being the worst-selling game in all of Sonic's long history, Sega is still pushing forward, with the next entry in the Sonic Boom franchise scheduled to release on the Nintendo 3DS in September of 2016. The game was originally slated for a 2015 release, but was delayed so the developers could have more time to polish the game up. Considering how bad the prior Wii U and 3DS Sonic Boom games were, that was probably a smart move. That being said, we're not expecting a masterpiece, and you probably shouldn't, either.
