Users of cloud storage service Dropbox will now be able to share their photos, videos and other files through Facebook Messenger.

The feature, which will require both the Messenger app and the Dropbox app installed in the user's iOS or Android device, has started to roll out today, April 12.

Dropbox wants file sharing to be as simple as possible, says the company. The news was also posted on Messenger's official Facebook account.

This is the first time that Messenger teamed up with a cloud-based file storage and sharing service, Facebook confirmed.

To access the feature, users can tap the More button on Messenger. Dropbox will appear as one of the listed options, and by selecting the storage app, users can share files in their Dropbox accounts without having to exit Messenger.

For Dropbox videos and images, including animated GIFs, that are sent through Messenger, the files will be directly displayed and can be viewed in the app. For all other files, users can tap them to launch the Dropbox mobile app, where the received files can be previewed and saved, and for those that do not have Dropbox installed, they will be sent Web links.

Dropbox noted that some potential applications of the feature include sharing vacation pictures with other people in the trip, spreading homemade videos to friends and sending funny memes.

"We want people to communicate just the way they want to on Messenger, with everyone they care about," said Messenger product head Stan Chudnovsky in a statement, adding that users will be able to add more personality and style to conversations through the Dropbox sharing feature.

Facebook is launching its annual F8 developer conference today, April 12, and the social network is expected to have more in store for Messenger. It is believed that Facebook will be unveiling chatbots and Live Chat APIs for the communication app.
