Over the years, Dark Souls fans have gotten used to depressing storylines. Whether it's the doomed Catarina family in the original game, Lucatiel of Mirrah's slow descent into madness from Dark Souls II, or Eileen the Crow's suicide mission in Bloodborne, From Software has made a habit of creating lovable characters and dragging them through the mud.

Dark Souls III (somewhat predictably) continues this tradition: it may take players some time to find her, but Sirris of the Sunless Realms' story isn't exactly upbeat. On the plus side, her questline is also one of the best in the game: instead of simply searching for a static NPC at certain points throughout the story, Sirris actually takes on an active role.

In typical Dark Souls fashion, however, figuring out how and when to aid Sirris in her quest can be a backwards, immensely confusing task - unless you know where to go and what to look for. That's where this guide comes in - but first:

SPOILER WARNING!

If you hadn't already guessed, we'll be talking about the end of Sirris' storyline - if you want to try and figure it out on your own, bookmark this guide and come back if you need help.

In The Halfway Fortress

The first thing you'll need to do is simple: just talk to Anri of Astora and Horace in the Halfway Fortress. They're nearly impossible to miss (they're standing right next to the bonfire when you arrive), and speaking with them will trigger Sirris' first appearance.

In The Firelink Shrine

Following your chat with Anri, warp back to the Firelink Shrine. Sirris will appear on the steps next to Andre's hallway, and when you try to talk to her, she'll tell you that she doesn't feel like chatting.

Don't worry, that's not the end of her quest - she just needs a bit more incentive before she'll open up to you.

In Farron Keep

Once you find the Watchdogs of Farron bonfire (inside a massive tower in Farron Keep), head back outside and take the stairs to the left. As soon as you reach the top, attack the wall to reveal a hidden corpse and its loot - the Dreamchaser's Ashes.

Head back to Firelink Shrine and try to give the ashes to the Shrine Handmaiden. She'll decline, then ask you where you found them - your answer doesn't affect the quest, so pick whichever answer feels right.

Reload your game, and Sirris will be back in her usual spot. She can now be summoned for a number of fights throughout the game, so keep an eye out for her summon sign.

In Irithyll Of The Boreal Valley

After giving Sirris the ashes, continue through the game until you've defeated the Deacons of the Deep. You'll receive the Small Doll, which grants you access into Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

Upon entering Irithyll, you'll be attacked by the horrifying demon lizard-dog. Kill it, take its ring and activate the first bonfire of the area. Reload, then backtrack to where you killed the lizard-dog - you'll find a summon sign that'll bring you into Sirris' world.

Here, you and Sirris will team up to take down Creighton the Wanderer. Seeing as it's a two-on-one fight, it shouldn't be that hard to beat him - just make sure that Sirris survives, and she'll talk to you again back in the Firelink Shrine.

In The Undead Settlement

Again, you'll have to proceed through the game until you reach the ruins of Anor Londo and kill Aldritch of the Deep. Once you do, head back to the Undead Settlement and find the Curse-Rotted Greatwood's arena. Before you go warping straight to the Pit of Hollows bonfire, know that Sirris' next summon sign will be in the hallway just before the boss fight - instead, use the Dilapidated Bridge or Cliff Underside bonfires and just run past any enemies.

You'll be taking on Holy Knight Hodrick again (assuming he invaded your game earlier), but at least you have Sirris on your side this time. Take Hodrick down, and Sirris will return to Firelink Shrine yet again.

Here, Sirris will offer her services as a knight. If you decline, you can find her completely Hollowed and hostile back in the Pit of Hollows. However, if you accept, she'll thank you and continue to help with any boss fights you summon her to.

In The Cemetery Of Ash

Unfortunately, Sirris' story doesn't have a very happy ending.

After defeating Prince Lothric and his elder brother Lorian (which you can summon Sirris for), you'll find her body in front of her grandfather's grave just outside of the Firelink Shrine.

It's a shame that Sirris can't live to see the linking of the First Flame, but at the very least, she leaves her Sunless Talisman for you to use.

Sure, Sirris' quest for redemption doesn't have a very uplifting ending, but there are a few NPCs that can make it through the full game - if you're looking for a more uplifting sidequest, check out our guide to Siegward of Catarina's story!
