Apple's iPhone 6 is shaping up to be a hit among consumers, with the company reporting a record-breaking number of presales.

In only 24 hours of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus being up for preorder, Apple reports it got a whopping 4 million preorders.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "Preorders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can't wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday."

The 4 million devices sold is double the number of iPhone 5s sold during preorder in 2012. While Apple never officially released the amount of preorders that it got with the 5s and 5c last year, estimates suggest it was probably around 2.2 million.

"Apple will be selling every iPhone it can make, at least through October. Because of this, the first weekend sales are typically more indicative of supply than demand," said analysts at Raymond James.

There are a number of possible reasons for Apple's success with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple has touted the device as the biggest upgrade since the iPhone was first released in 2007, and for good reason. Not only does the iPhone 6 get a design upgrade, now with curved edges and a larger size, but it also receives significant upgrades as far as specs go.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus also introduce a number of new features, such as Apple Pay, which makes use of the NFC technology that is being implemented in Apple devices for the first time.

Another big update in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is the camera, with Apple stepping up its game and even offering optical image stabilization in the iPhone 6 Plus. While the device is no Nikon, it does make the iPhone 6 Plus able to do more than just the occasional photo at a party.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on sale in stores on Sept. 19, but for those who can't wait that long it's up for preorder on all four of the large carriers in the United States. On Sept. 19, the devices will be available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. On Sept. 26, they will be available in an additional 20 countries.
