Apple will release the new line of iPhone handsets in autumn, and the new iPhone 7 comes packed with improved features, revamped design lines, and more.

The company is rumored to stick to two screen sizes for the upcoming line, so fans of the iOS will get a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch handset in the new series.

Here is what we've heard so far about the next generation of iPhones.

Design and Build

Some rumors point out that the upcoming iteration of iPhones will go full throttle on thinness, with figures varying between 6.0 and 6.5 mm (0.23 to 0.25 inches).

A reworked design could be in tow, with the iPhone 7 ditching the full-metal jacket and heading to a more contemporary material, which some speculate could be ceramic. A revamping that renounces iPhone 6s' curved edges in favor of straight lines could also be inbound.

Another important change on the iPhone 7's chassis is the removal of antenna bands from the backside of the handset, giving the device a cleaner all-metal aspect. The antenna bands from around the top and from the sides of the phone will stay.

There is no official information about the waterproof status of the new gen iPhone. As the iPhone 6s is water-resistant only to a certain degree, a full waterproof build would be welcome.

TrendForce reports that the new edition of phones will be entirely waterproof.

Apple purportedly wants to eliminate the headphone jack, which means more room for a second speaker. If several leaks pertaining to cases for the iPhone 7 are to be believed, the 3.5-mm headphone jack will be discarded in the larger variant of the new phone. This means that the 5.5-inch headset will use either the lightning port for plugging the headphones, or rely on a wireless set of ear buds.

However, the 4.7-inch version of iPhone 7 will most likely retain the standard headphone jack.

Specs

Technical specs for the new iPhone 7 are prone to speculation, but there is a high chance that the company will embed most powerful hardware in its latest smartphone iteration. Specifically, we refer to the TSMC's next-gen of A10 processors.

Insiders who wanted to keep their anonymity stated that the standard iPhone 7 should ship with 2 GB of RAM, while the larger model will host 3 GB of RAM.

What is more, the camera combo is said to differ between the two devices. The 5.5-inch iPhone 7 could sport a two-camera mount on its rear, the first of its kind from Apple. Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will maintain the standard single-lens camera that has optical zoom and good optimization for low-light conditions.

A February coverage indicated that the OEM wants to go for a full-flat design for the back of the new phones. This means that the rear camera(s) will get pushed back into the body of the handsets. It is still unclear whether this design choice will apply to the 4.7-inch, the 5.5-inch, or both.

Release Date

Apple has the habit to schedule iPhone launches in September, during a big event, and until now it has kept its promise. MacRumors relies on a secure source when it says that the iPhone 7 will land in September, in spite of rumors claiming that an earlier release is possible.
