One thing is obvious: From Software doesn't like people who try to cheat in Dark Souls 3.

That's why the company has taken steps to prevent cheaters, including instilling bans on people who might even think about cheating in the game. The developer also recently released a patch to prevent players from cheating, but that patch ended up creating more problems than it fixed.

From Software released the patch for the PC version of the game after hackers learned to exploit the game's previous cheat detection system, resulting in innocent players getting banned for something that they didn't do. The patch prevented that, but after installing it, many players reported that it made their games freeze up.

The developer announced that it would temporarily pull the patch until those issues get resolved.

"The patch has been removed temporarily to fix the freeze issues," wrote the developer on the game's Steam forums. "We hope to reinstate the patch ASAP. If you fall victim to one of the bugs previously fixed, don't worry, you won't be penalized. We will keep you posted as soon as we have more info. Thank you for your understanding."

Players worried about getting incorrectly targeted as cheaters can rest easy: the game's server team is double-checking accounts tagged for cheating to make sure that they are actually cheaters and not victims of hackers' efforts.

Dark Souls 3 has become a haven for cheaters, with PC players learning to write code and running mods to get around certain challenges within the game. There is a program in place to scan the game for cheaters and ban them, but hackers quickly learned their way around that program. Those hackers will still do their best to bypass the system, at least until a new patch gets released that doesn't break the game.

Dark Souls 3 is a difficult game, much like its predecessors in the franchise, so that means it will attract cheaters who want to get through it quickly with the least amount of effort. But there are some gamers out there who managed to do that without cheating, by learning the ins and outs of the title and speedrunning it in just a little over an hour.
